Water Damage Restoration - Mold Remediation

If you’ve sustained water damage to your home or business, aside from the water damaging your property, mold may get a foothold in your house. If you are planning to hire a water damage restoration service to clean up the water, you’ll have to be sure that they are qualified to handle mold and mildew, which may grow and spread on the drywall and insulation of your structure.

Can’t I just clean it up myself?

Sometimes mold can be a low level problem, often in an area that has an occasional spike in humidity in an enclosed area with little or no air flow.  If you can remove and dry up the soaked area, and get air moving at a pretty good velocity, you may be able to clean it up yourself.  If your structure has gotten wet, but NOT soaked, you may be alright.

When a structure or area is flooded, odds are very good that everything the water came in contact with were thoroughly saturated with water, and the high ambient humidity and shear volume of water in the surrounding area dramatically increases the odds of a serious mold problem.  In a full on flooding scenario, you can certainly start the cleanup  process, but you will most likely need some help from a water damage restoration specialist.

Even low levels of mold can cause serious health consequences, if it’s one of the more toxic strains, or for folks who have a high sensitivity to mold and mildew.

Reactions very from person to person, but a toxic mold problem can cause headaches, allergic reactions, watering eyes, lung infections, asthma, and even nausea and vomiting.

If after a short time you start having any discomfort or symptoms at all, get out of the building immediately and call a water damage restoration specialist immediately, if you worsen or become obviously ill, see a doctor as soon as possible, and tell them you have been exposed to some nasty mold and mildew.
